Solace Women’s Aid workers pause strike as redundancy process stops for talks – hold vigil for domestic violence victims

“The victim/survivors have to be at the forefront of this conversation, because at the end of the day if they cut the service it mostly affects them. They won’t be able to get the support that they really, really need. We are the main service in Tower Hamlets. Domestic violence support workers at Solace Women’s Aid in Tower Hamlets have temporarily paused their planned strike action following a breakthrough in discussions with management. Solace has agreed to suspend its ongoing redundancy process until Monday, March 3, allowing time for negotiations with Tower Hamlets Council.

The workers, all IDVAs (Independent Domestic Violence Advisors) and UVW members, had voted unanimously for strike action, originally set to begin on February 14, in response to the threat of job losses that would undermine life-saving support for domestic abuse survivors. If they proceed, this would be the first strike by domestic violence workers in British history.

The decision to pause industrial action comes after an outpouring of solidarity from the local community, culminating in hundreds gathering outside Tower Hamlets Town Hall to support the Solace workers. The community sent a clear message: these services are vital and must be protected. 

In addition, a vigil was held to honour victims of femicide, stand with survivors and reaffirm the importance of frontline domestic violence support. A minute of silence was held after reading the names of those killed by domestic violence in Tower Hamlets, creating a powerful moment of remembrance.

While the pause in redundancies and strike action marks a step forward, Solace workers remain determined to fight for their jobs and the survivors who rely on them. If no resolution is found during negotiations, they are prepared to take strike action to defend the future of domestic abuse services in Tower Hamlets.
