RIP Alpha Anne
1984-2025
We are truly saddened to learn of the tragic and untimely passing of UVW member Alpha Anne. He passed away yesterday at the age of 40 after a difficult battle with cancer, leaving behind a wife and a one year old baby boy.
Alpha was born in Mauritania on 4 May 1984 and came to the UK as an asylum seeker. He was an extraordinary man, a loving husband and father and an incredible trade unionist.
He joined United Voices of the World, UVW, in 2020 and went on to lead a historic campaign that forced Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, GOSH, to end outsourcing, which resulted in over 300 cleaners being brought in-house as direct employees of the NHS. This monumental win not only brought equality to hundreds of workers but re-distributed millions of pounds into the pockets of those who had been undervalued for too long, most of them migrant workers.
Alpha also became the lead claimant in a groundbreaking group legal claim against GOSH, arguing that outsourcing mainly Black, brown and migrant workers on inferior pay and T&Cs was institutional racism.
Sadly he will not be around to see the outcome in the appeal to this case that will be heard in the Employment Appeal Tribunal in October this year.
His tireless dedication to fighting discrimination, even when it came at great personal cost, leaves a legacy that will continue to inspire.
Alpha was a hero for the cleaners at GOSH and he’ll be sorely missed by his colleagues who have organised a collection for his widow and toddler.
Please give what you can, every penny will help his family.
