COVID-19 Training: 100s of workers join the UVW online

Today, hundreds of UVW Spanish speaking members joined a groundbreaking online session entitled “Knowing your rights in times of COVID-19”.

The participatory online session run by Petros Elia, a UVW organiser, with support from UVW case workers, is part of a COVID-19 online outreach initiative to all members.

“We’re going through an extremely stressful situation, not only for our health but also our rights and our financial situations. We must defend ourselves as a union and as a community. As always it starts with learning about our rights, how to defend them and how to claim them. We’ve always done this and now it’s more important than ever that we stick together, as we always have.”  said Elias on opening the session.

The Coronavirus Job Retention scheme and employers’ health and safety obligations were covered at length with members asking questions about their specific cases.

Luis asked, “What does it mean to be in the ‘Furloughed’ category. How does the company assign this category, does it depend on seniority, place of work or is it this a decision by supervisors or managers?”

Claudia Turbet-Delof, UVW treasurer commented, “We nearly broke the internet! We had hundreds of workers queuing up to join us. This is the first of many sessions – we have more to come and we will make sure all the recordings are available on our dedicated COVID 19 online hub so all workers can fight back”

You can find information on your rights at work and information about upcoming online training, on our English and Spanish COVID pages.
